Milos Forman McMurphy has a criminal past and has once again gotten himself into trouble and is sentenced by the court. This is Nicholson's film, never Fletcher's. She has limited screen time and plays a supporting character not main. I found her tedious and the AA win for Fletcher a puzzle. McMurphy beats Ratched at every turn until the powers that be basically kill him because the patients love him and follow him. They cannot beat him otherwise because it's his game, and he's an expert. So the film shows us the horror of that kind of power: and not Ratched, rather, the system she belongs to. But there is a win against them. It is Chief, who rescues him, outwits them all, and wins both respect and freedom. It's finally his story and with his flight the hope McMurphy represents.
